Video of a Hooded Mergenser swiming and diving in the Hypericum pond near the trail. Hooded Mergansers dive to catch aquatic insects and small fish in their thin serrated bills. An adult male, as seen here, has a prominent white crest that is raised during courtship displayes. Females and immatures are gray and brown, with warm tawny-cinnamon tones on the head. In summer, these small ducks nest in holes in trees near water.
