Kiplinger Nature Preserve was purchased by Martin county from the Kiplinger Wash- ington Editors, Inc. and the Kiplinger Foundation Inc. in June of 1991.
The purchase consisted of 157 acres - 116 contiguous acres located on the west side of State Rd. 76 and south of Indian Street and 41 acres located on the northern two-thirds of a long narrow mangrove-fringed island in the South Fork of the St. Lucie River. Together the island and mainland parcels include almost 3 miles of riverfront.
The portion of the River adjacent to the Preserve is a brackish estuane environment where base freshwater flow from surrounding upland drainage mixes with saline ocean waters entering through the St. Lucie inlet which is approximately 12 river miles downstream of the property.
